CWS Executive Director Recognized in Several
“Best Under 40” Lists
Serena Powell, Executive Director of Community Work Services, has
been recognized for her contributions to the organization and the
Boston community by two Boston institutions, the Boston Jaycees
and the Boston Business Journal.
In September, 2006 at a black tie gala at the Colonnade Hotel in
Boston, the Boston Jaycees honored 10 individuals between the ages
of 21 and 40 “who have contributed to the Greater Boston community
through their exceptional professional, civic and personal
achievements.” The Ten Outstanding Young Leaders (TOYL) were
selected by a distinguished panels of judges from nominations
submitted by the general public.
CWS’ Ms. Powell was one of the 10.
She joins an impressive list of past recipients of the award,
including such well known names as John F. Kennedy (1952), Bob
Cousy (1959), F. Lee Bailey (1965), television personalities Janet
Langhart (1977) and Heather Kahn (1999), restaurateur Roger
Berkowitz (1987), Boston Red Sox infielder John Valentin (1998)
and others.
In naming Ms. Powell to its 10th annual 40 Under 40 edition, the
BBJ acknowledged what she has done to help CWS grow its revenues
and increase its job placement rates substantially since joining
the organization. The BBJ wrote:
“CWS is turning a profit thanks to the $5 million Powell raised in
funding for CWS' job training programs since she took over in
2004, increasing revenue by 15% and job placement rates by more
than 80%. In 2005, Community Work Services booked its first profit
in several years.
The numbers, however, are daunting: 90% of candidates have
disabilities or addiction issues, and many have been out of the
work force for years.
Powell has made it work, involving partners such as TJX Co., the
Massachusetts Lodging Association and the Downtown North Business
Association to bring skills and employment to hundreds of Boston's
former homeless.”
Serena Powell joined Community Work Services in 2004.
